Police (polícia, departamento policial)  é um substantivo plural e assim é normalmente usado com verbo no plural. The police are investigating the case. The police were called.  Já policeman, policewoman ou police officer, por se referirem a indivíduos são, of course, seguidos de verbo no singular. The policeman is here. The policewoman is there. The police officer is over there.

Mas sempre que usarmos police com referência à corporação, o verbo é usado no plural. The police are looking for the criminal. E também quando police se referir aos policiais, individualmente. Several police were injured when violence broke out.
